Boston on lockdown; Bruins, Red Sox game status' unknown

With the fifth largest metropolitan area in the United States on lockdown as a massive, area-wide manhunt for a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing goes house to house, the Boston Bruins and tonight’s opponent Pittsburgh Penguins were forced by the event to cancel their morning skate and the league may be compelled to postpone tonight’s game between the two.

The New England Patriots also cancelled their pre-draft news conference

With real life events trumping the sometimes surreal world of sports, cancelling the skate and the game is a no brainer.  The events may also force the postponement of the Boston Red Sox baseball game against the Kansas City Royals scheduled for tonight as well, as public safety takes precedence.

The situation is fluid and changing by the moment. Of the two men suspected of being the Marathon bombers, one has been shot and killed and the other, the dead man’s younger brother, is loose somewhere in the city or surrounding area and, given the recent series of violence, it is prudent to believe that he is very armed and very dangerous – hence the lockdown.

All residents of Boston and some suburbs were ordered to stay in their homes Friday morning as the search for the surviving suspect in the marathon bombings continued after a long night of violence that left the other suspect dead.

Boston Police commissioner Ed Davis ordered the lockdown, including the closure of businesses and schools.  The volatility of the situation clearly overshadows any and all recreational activities until the situation is resolved.

Chowder and Champions will keep you apprised of any postponements and will bring you any more information as it becomes available.
