Our beloved Red Sox have just signed (pending a physical) the despised A.J. Pierzynski to a 1 year, $8.25M deal. Fresh off of a Championship and a revamped roster that included a team full of “good guys” people may wonder why G.M. Ben Cherington would sign A.J.?  Before getting too upset, let’s look this thing over. Salty was a good guy and a great teammate but his Defense was rather poor, to the point of being benched in the World Series. As for A.J., let’s not overreact. Here’s a quote from one of Pierzynski’s ex-coaches.

Ozzie Guillen said, A.J. is the type of player that opponents despise, but teammates appreciate. His hard-nosed style of play should fit in on the Red Sox.”

If that isn’t enough then let’s remember 1. Its only for 1 year and 2. It’s a bridge to the prospects- (Vazquez and Swihart).

Now let’s look at some of A.J.’s Stats:

Offensively:

2013- He hit .272, a .722OPS, with 17 homers and 70 RBI’s with the Texas Rangers. He spent the previous 8 years with the Chicago White Sox in which he played at least 128 games each season. A.J. has a .283 Career Average, a .750 Career OPS, with 172 HR’s and 800 RBIs.

Defensively:

2013- a .998 Fielding %, Caught Stealing (24), 2 Errors.

For his Career- .995 Fielding %, Caught Stealing (303), 57 total Errors in 1,678 Games (1,585 Games Started).

Now that Ben has his Catcher for the upcoming season, my next question is “Who plays First base?”

I have to assume that First base will be the next position to concentrate on. Mike Napoli would be my first choice and we all know how much he loved it here but I’m getting a little nervous that we haven’t heard more. So with that in mind, let’s take a look at an alternative. For me there’s only one alternative and that is Corey Hart. He is coming off of surgery on his knees but if he passes a physical I wouldn’t hesitate to sign him.

Hart’s Stats:

2012- a .270 Average, .841OPS, with 30 HR’s and 83RBI’s with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Career- a .276Average, .824OPS, 154 HR’s and 508RBI’s in 945 Games played.

Hart can play both First base and the Outfield. If the Red Sox can’t re-sign Napoli, signing Hart to a 1-2 year deal makes a ton of sense to me.

If First base isn’t the next signing, then what position and what player do you think comes on board next?
