The Red Sox have re-signed 1st Basemen and beard extraordinaire Mike Napoli for the next 2 years. Though they overpaid on a yearly basis for “Nap” I’m happy he’s back in the fold. The question remains, what comes next? Outfield? Re-signing of Stephen Drew?
Time will tell but let’s take a look at the Outfield options.
For me there are two Free Agents that peak my interest.
1. Choo, who in 2013 posted- .285AVG/.423OBP/.885OPS, 21HR’s. I wouldn’t have him play CF, instead he would play in Left. The biggest problem here is; How many years and for how much?
2. R.Davis, who in 2013 posted- .260AVG/.312OBP/.687OPS, 6HR’s, 45 Stolen Bases
Davis would replace the speed lost when Ellsbury left. He would split time with Jackie Bradley Jr. and give the other two Outfielders a rest.
One of the Red Sox reporters (I won’t name) keeps saying the Red Sox don’t have the money for any more Free Agents; I disagree and wonder where he gets his financial numbers from. I believe they have over $30M to spend.
The other possibility is to trade for an Outfielder. There are two that come to mind, Matt Kemp and Giancarlo Stanton. One would take a ton of prospects to land (if at all), the other would take less but L.A. would have to pay a big chunk of his salary. Neither player was 100% healthy in 2013 but let’s look at their most recent stat’s.
Kemp- 73G, 71H, 15D, 6HR, 33RBI, .270AVG/.328OBP/.723OPS
Stanton- 116G, 106H, 26D, 24HR, 62RBI, .249AVG/.365OBP/.845OPS
The Red Sox would be buying low on either one of the above players after a down year and injuries. Can Ben swing a deal at the upcoming Winter Meetings? I believe we will see a trade or two, which will most likely include one of their Starting Pitchers and or Prospects. Until then, what would you do?
