The Red Sox continue to stoke the fire at the MLB winter meetings, as hot stove rumors are swirling around the club. Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com reported Thursday that Boston is in discussions with free agent reliever Ryan Madson.
Madson has been plagued by injury the past two seasons, missing time due to Tommy John surgery and successive setbacks that followed. The 33-year old right-hander has not thrown a pitch in the bigs since 2011.
He has experience in a set-up role and as a closer. His last healthy season was quite impressive. With the Philadelphia Phillies in 2011, Madson recorded 32 saves and notched a 2.37 ERA.
It seems logical that the Red Sox could snag Madson at a discounted price given his past injuries. All in all, signing Madson would be a low risk-high reward play.
Boston is one of several clubs reportedly interested in acquiring him.
