There has been quite a bit written about the Red Sox desire for a Right handed compliment to Jackie Bradley Jr. Names like Matt Kemp have come up over and over again. Though a healthy Kemp would be a solid acquisition, could we really expect him to remain healthy? The problem I have with adding a high priced outfielder, in particular Kemp, is he wouldn’t be a complimentary player, he would play in place of Jackie and I don’t believe anyone really wants that. My initial choice was Rajai Davis, with his speed but perhaps John Farrell weighed in on his ex-player, deterring the Sox from signing him.
So what can or will the Red Sox do? I’m not sure what they will do but here’s a suggestion of what I might do.
I would try to swing a deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks for old friend Cody Ross. He could be that Right handed compliment for Jackie. Arizona has a plethora of Outfielders, especially after acquiring Mark Trumbo in trade. Ross was one of the few bright lights in an otherwise dreadful season when he was here.
Cody Ross 2013 stats:
94g, .278AVG/.331OBP/.745OPS, 8HR’s
I would also try to acquire from ARZ; Cliff Pennington, who is a switch hitting Utility player. Also played for; Oakland.
Pennington 2013 stats:
(2B)- 29g, 2E, .980FPCT
(SS)- 51g, 5E, .977FPCT
(3B)- 2g, 1E, .857FPCT
Now you’re probably wondering “For whom?” I don’t claim to be a G.M. but let’s throw out some hypotheticals.
The Red Sox have, 1. Extra Starting Pitchers and 2. A need to shed a little payroll. So let’s say either Ryan Dempster or Jake Peavy, who were much better in the NL and have a high salary. More than likely it would take more than that so you have to look at Arizona’s other needs. I believe they may like- Ryan Lavarnway for Catching depth. Lavarnway is stuck behind A.J. Pierzynski and David Ross. He is also in the way of the more enamored prospects in; Christian Vazquez, Blake Swihart and perhaps even Dan Butler.
So what do you think? Would you trade Dempster or Peavy, with Lavarnway for Ross and Pennington?
