Saturday will mark one week since Shawn Thornton pummeled the helpless Pittsburgh Penguins defender Brooks Orpik. He’s still waiting on word from the NHL Players Safety Department regarding the length of his expected suspension.
Thornton met with Brendan Shanahan, the director of player safety on Friday, though no announcement was made. According to Joe Haggerty of CSNNE.com, several league sources made it clear to him that a decision regarding Thornton’s fate is expected to be announced sometime on Saturday.
Various rumblings seem to indicate that Thornton will receive a suspension somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 games, but in no way is that a certainty.
Orpik has already resumed skating with his teammates and his rapid recovery signals the injury wasn’t as bad as it seemed this past Saturday at the Garden. Thornton on the other hand has missed three games already.
