To no ones surprise there aren’t many Boston Celtics participating in this year’s NBA All-Star weekend in New Orleans. Jared Sullinger and Kelly Olynyk will be representing the C’s in the NBA Rising Stars game tonight playing for Chris Webber‘s squad. If we really want to stretch it, we can say Bill Simmons coaching one of the celebrity teams is some representation of Boston right? Skip the celebrity game. That hour or 90 minutes should be reserved for Valentine’s Day dinner with your significant other.
So what does the all-star weekend mean for Celtics fans this year?
It will be fun to watch Sullinger and Olynyk take layups and three-pointers in the Rising Stars game, as they won’t be the high-flying, fancy-dribbling stars that most fans are excited to watch. The Slam Dunk contest offers some excitement with the trio of Paul George, John Wall, and Damian Lillard participating alongside last year’s winner Terrence Ross. I would recommend not giving up on the dunk contest this year just yet, but I say that every year and I have been wrong for quite some time now.
The Three-Point contest and the Skills competition are usually mediocre, but there are a few reasons to be excited. Milwaukee Buck’s freak Giannis Antetokounmpo will be participating in the skills competition, even though he isn’t the prototypical contestant. It should be fun to watch him take two steps between obstacles and if he can make that mid-range jump shot, he could set a new record (assuming he doesn’t mail it in).
Stephen Curry is in the three-point shootout and in my mind, he is going to have at least one perfect score, so my guess is no one would want to miss that.
The only other interesting aspect of NBA All-Star weekend to Celtics fans (perhaps outside of the game itself) is seeing how many contests Damian Lillard can win. He is going to be participating in all five of the competitions and that alone is a story-line worth following. If he is victorious in the skills competition, then fans will be very interested to see if he can pull off the sweep for the evening.
Nonetheless, Celtics fans should enjoy this weekend. There is a chance to watch some of our young prospects play with their colleagues, a somewhat interesting dunk contest, and there is always a chance to see some NBA players dressed up in ridiculous outfits as they take in the weekends events. Russell Westbrook isn’t playing so maybe hell show up with three different styles!
