Even during a year when both teams are fighting for lottery positioning, the Boston Celtics still want to cream the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers come to town tonight with a few players who were expected to be in different uniforms by the time this game came around. Pau Gasol, Jordan Hill and others stayed in purple and gold and will come into the Garden tonight with one of the league’s worst records.
Much like the Lakers, the hometown Celtics kept their current roster in tact and guys like Jeff Green, Brandon Bass, and Rajon Rondo will be wearing Celtic green for the rest of the season. So while both of these teams are not going to finish above .500 this season, there is still a lot of talent in tonight’s matchup.
Rondo and Gasol are very familiar with these rivalry games and it will be good for the young guys on the C’s to play an intense game in a season bereft of them. Kelly Olynyk went into the break with two consecutive double-doubles, and will be earning more minutes as proof of his 24 minutes on the floor against the Phoenix Suns earlier this week.
One nice wrinkle in tonight’s game is that the Sports Guy, Bill Simmons, will be doing the play-by-play for ESPN. Now he isn’t very good at this aspect of his job, but he is entertaining and there can always be a “Don’t get fired,” moment when he is on. I would also like to thank him and Jalen Rose for bringing the idea of “Don’t get fired” moments to the forefront of my daily thoughts. I am pulling for a Celtics blowout, which may lead to at least one great quote tonight from Simmons.
