Patriots release Steve Gregory

Veteran starting strong safety for the New England Patriots Steve Gregory will be released by the team Friday, as reported by his agent David Canter via Twitter.

After a lackluster 2012 with the Pats (37 total tackles in 12 starts), Gregory greatly improved in his second year with the team, recording 79 tackles in 11 starts. However, a thumb injury in Week 9 sidelined Gregory, leaving rookie Duron Harmon to start in his place during his time off.

The move will save the Patriots $2.85 million in salary cap space.
