Predicting the 2014 New England Patriots Schedule

Finally the NFL has told us when they will announce the 2014 NFL schedule. On Wednesday at 8pm on NFL Network, we will find out when the New England Patriots will replay last year’s AFC champions, a game undoubtedly that will be scheduled for Sunday or Monday Night Football, when Brandon Spikes will make his return home, and the first time Derrelle Revis faces his old team.

What we do currently know is the preseason schedule:

  • Week 1: Thursday, August 7th at Washington Redskins
  • Week 2: Friday, August 15th vs. Philadelphia Eagles
  • Week 3: Friday, August 22nd vs. Carolina Panthers
  • Week 4: Thursday, August 28th at New York Giants

This schedule sets up another possible joint practice session with Chip Kelly and the Philadelphia Eagles.

What we also know is who the Patriots will play in 2014 and where that game will take place. This year the Patriots have a pretty tough schedule, facing both the AFC West and NFC North. With the Broncos being the Broncos, the Raiders taking leaps in the right direction, San Diego always putting up points, and Jamaal Charles and the Chiefs, the AFC West is no easy challenge. In the NFC North, affectionately known as the Black and Blue Division, the Bears, Lions, Vikings, and Packers are bound to give this Patriots defense, even with Revis, fits.

At home the Patriots will play the Bills, Dolphins, Jets, Broncos, Raiders, Bengals, Bears and Lions and will visit the Bills, Dolphins, Jets, Chiefs, Chargers, Colts, Packers, and Vikings. Initially, the games with the biggest potential for problems are at home against the Broncos and Bears and on the road against the Chargers, Colts and Packers.

The Patriots recently partnered with Samsonite for a Patriots Schedule Contest where we’ve mapped out a possible regular season schedule. Our best guess goes as follows, with the Patriots being lucky enough to score a mid-season bye yet again (thanks NFL!)

  • Week 1: vs. Miami
  • Week 2: at Kansas City
  • Week 3: at Jets (the return of Revis)
  • Week 4: vs. Oakland
  • Week 5: vs. Buffalo (welcome home, Spikes)
  • Week 6: at Minnesota
  • Week 7: vs. Bengals
  • Week 8: BYE
  • Week 9: at Green Bay
  • Week 10: at Indianapolis
  • Week 11: vs. Jets
  • Week 12: at San Diego
  • Week 13: vs. Chicago
  • Week 14: at Miami
  • Week 15: vs. Denver (AFC rematch)
  • Week 16: at Buffalo
  • Week 17: vs. Detroit

I could easily be persuaded to think the game against Detroit would be switched with Chicago, with a Thanksgiving matchup on the schedule, but didn’t ultimately go with it.

What do you think about the 2014 Patriots schedule? Did we get it right?
