How the Boston Red Sox can save their season

After an unbelievable 2013 season that ended with a Championship for our Red Sox, expectations were high going into the 2014 season. After a slow start, a long losing streak that was followed up by a winning streak, only to be followed up by another losing streak, fans are left wondering who are these Red Sox?

Though it is true that they’ve suffered through some injuries, some ineffectiveness, players not playing up to potential, it’s hard not to place blame squarely on GM Ben Cherington’s shoulders. If we are to credit him for last years Championship win, then surely we can place the blame for not building a competitive enough team this year right?

Though I do believe Ben didn’t do enough this off-season to improve his team, I still believe he can save this team and the season. How he can do that is open to debate but here are my suggestions.

  1. Acquire that Right Handed hitting Outfielder Ben has spoke of but has yet to acquire.

My Suggestion: Colorado’s; Drew Stubbs: .325AVG/.362OBP/.492SLG/.853OPS  1WAR

There may be other solutions, other names to acquire but this is the first player that comes to mind and can produce. Stubbs can play any Outfield position, has some speed and shows occasional pop. Colorado after a fast start have struggled of late and are in need of Pitching (Team ERA of 4.67), perhaps Ben could offer Allen Webster (or alike) in trade.

At minimum Ben should sign Cuban defector Rusney Castillo. A speedy little outfielder and he is available to sign with anyone at this time.

  1. Acquire one solid Starting Pitcher.

My Suggestion: Chicago Cubs; Jason Hammel: 2.53ERA, .88WHIP

OR

Jeff Samardzija: 2.54ERA, 1.13WHIP

The Cubs are going no-where fast (25-35 on the season) and annually make their pitchers available for prospects. The Red Sox have an abundance of prospects with which they could use in trade. I’m not sure what the Cubs would want in return, so I won’t speculate.

While some people may be thinking the Sox should be “Sellers”, I think they should be “Buyers” but Ben has to make these moves sooner vs later or risk another lost season. What a shame that would be one year after winning a Championship and pulling a city together after a tragedy.

Go Sox!
