The Boston Red Sox, along with division rivals Baltimore and Toronto, reportedly had scouts in attendance watching Jeff Samardzija of the Cubs pitch in his last start, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.
While the three aforementioned teams could have been taking a look at other Cubs players, or perhaps even Pirates players who Samardzija was pitching against, it seems highly unlikely.
Boston, Toronto and Baltimore all have known deficiencies in their starting rotations. They all consider themselves to be contenders in the AL East. Adding a pitcher of Samardzija’s caliber is high on each clubs wish list as the trade deadline rapidly approaches.
Samardzija threw the ball very well in that start back on June 12. The tall righty fanned seven batters in six innings of work.
Samardzija is 2-6 thus far this season with a 2.77 ERA. He’s struck out 82 batters over 91 innings of work.
