Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine, a former New York Jets coach, believes that the Patriots may have a copy of the Jets playbook.
While Spygate was pretty amazing, this idea is easily the most maniacal plan that Pats coach Bill Belichick has been accused of and we will find out in the coming days (or we won’t find out) if there is any truth to this story.
The hot rumor is that Belichick’s good friend Nick Saban, in what I am imagining was a meeting in an empty parking lot in Tuscaloosa with both mean wearing trench coats and not exchanging a word. Can you imagine those conversations between Saban and Belichick? 20 words maximum if they are in a room together for more than an hour.
At Wes Welker‘s wedding, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was apparently bragging about having the playbook, which makes this story a thousand times better. He may have mentioned something to another former Jets assistant coach Mike Smith, and that is where it seems Pettine is getting his intel.
Rex Ryan is going to give his two cents about the situation at a press conference that should be happening quite soon. There is no doubt that this will be must-watch television, at last at a 3:30 p.m. on a Thursday. Eventually Belichick will have to respond to whatever big Rex has to say and we are going to be in for another offseason of great back and forth between the two coaches.
Let’s see if the NFL gets involved if this story turns out to gain more traction in the coming days. If so, this may make Spygate look a lot less like the Watergate of recent NFL history.
