Red Sox Crush Astros, Win Third Straight

A series with the Houston Astros is exactly what the doctor ordered for the Red Sox who came away with an 8-3 win at Minute Maid Park on Friday night.

Boston has now won three in a row and the eight runs scored by the offense in the most since their nine runs in a loss against the Chicago Cubs over a week ago. The Red Sox now sit at 42-51 and remain roughly eight games out of a playoff spot.

Picking up his 10th win of the season was John Lackey, who now leads the club in that category. Lackey pitched six innings, giving up two earned runs on four hits with five walks and three strikeouts.

Much of the offense came from rookie catcher Christian Vazquez who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two doubles, and his first RBI of his career, picking up three on the evening. Vazquez is showing why the team has put so much faith in him to take over the backstop in the middle of the season and hopefully the Sox have a long-term replacement for Jason Varitek (Sorry Salty).

Chris Carter was basically the only offense for Houston, smacking two homers in the game, one off Lackey and one off reliever Craig Breslow. Carter now has 19 blasts on the season.

The two clubs meet up again tomorrow with a late-afternoon start at 4:15 PM EST at Fenway Park. Jake Peavy takes the hill for Boston, looking for his second win on the season, while Brett Oberholtzer will try and end the Red Sox winning-streak at three. Let’s see if the BoSox offense shows up for the second-consecutive game…
