It appears that the Boston Celtics will be going back to their roots as they have revealed a “new” alternate logo and have made a few decisions regarding their uniforms this upcoming season.
Personally, I think it never hurts to go back to a simple, more classic look but I question why they are doing this now, as opposed to a time when the team is expected to be more successful like the Celtics squad of old.
It was announced that this logo will NOT be on any of their jerseys this year, which means we’ll see it on merchandise, practice uniforms, and perhaps on the floor of TD Bank. They will revert back to having the front of their road unis say “BOSTON” instead of “CELTICS,” another move towards the past.
I would prefer them rotate between the old and the new kind of how they’ve been doing over the past few seasons. While the Celtics haven’t wavered far from their old jerseys anyway, it seems odd to throw out a 25-30 win team with the mindset that they will remind fans of old Celtics teams that had the likes of Bill Russell, Bob Cousey, Larry Bird, and others winning titles year after year.
The new alternate logo may help sell some new items to the younger generation of fans, but in what has been a disappointing offseason so far, this won’t distract C’s fans about what needs to be done to get this team competitive again in the coming years.
