Boston Celtics rookie-guard Marcus Smart was one of 13 players selected to the USA Men’s Basketball Select team on Tuesday.
The USA Select team trains with the USA Men’s Basketball squad in Las Vegas at the end of this month and usually consists of some of the best, young players in the NBA, so to be named is quite an honor for Smart.
Most of the guys on this year’s Select team are second-year players as Smart and fellow rookie, Chicago Bulls forward Doug McDermott are the only two first-year guys to be named. Most likely guys like Andrew Wiggins or Jabari Parker were asked to participate and didn’t accept. but Smart now gets an opportunity that players in the past have used to their advantage.
Guys like Kevin Durant, Kevin Love, and Russell Westbrook were members of the Select team and are now some of the best player’s in the country. Smart will have ample time to pick the brains of some of the best competitors the league has to offer, and perhaps he can learn to harness his passion and control more of what he does on the court. It is obvious that Smart has the talent, but he will need to learn how to put certain aspects of his game together and this experience can only be a positive for him.
