As we move closer to the MLB trade deadline, it appears that the Boston Red Sox trade rumors surrounding Jon Lester are gaining more and more traction.
FOX Sports has been all over the Jon Lester trade market, first nixing reports of Boston being very interested in Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp, and now reporting that other teams have been in touch with the Red Sox regarding their ace.
One report has the Seattle Mariners have contacted Boston about Lester, while another has the division-rival Baltimore Orioles checking in as well. It’s laughable to think that the Sox would move Lester to a club within their division for a few reasons, but I guess you can’t blame Baltimore for inquiring.
Seattle makes a bit more sense, even if Lester leaves them after this season. The Mariners have been linked to David Price for what seems like forever, and now with the Tampa Bay Rays making more of a push and are seemingly unable to lose, Lester slides in as the most coveted starter on the trade market.
Teams like the St. Louis Cardinals could join the push for Lester, but I don’t see the lefty re-signing anywhere he is dealt. The beauty of trading Lester is that the Red Sox may be the front runners to bring him back during the offseason anyway. Seattle could be the only place he is traded where I could see him wanting to stay three of four seasons, especially considering the amount of money they have been unloading on free agents as of late.
Until he gets traded, Lester is still a member of the Boston Red Sox, but it appears that his final days (for the time being) in a Boston uniform are happening right before our eyes.
