The New England Revolution edged Chivas USA at Gillette Stadium Saturday night, 1-0. Playing in a must win game with postseason implications on the line, Lee Nguyen secured a victory, scoring the lone goal of the contest. Goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth posted a clean sheet to help the Revs secure a much needed three points in the Eastern Conference standings.
Nguyen continued his terrific season, tallying the go-ahead goal in the 56th minute of play. Daigo Kobayashi and Kelyn Rowe teamed up to find Nguyen who let a ripper fly from the edge of the box. He now leads the Revs in scoring this season with nine goals.
It wasn’t all smooth sailing for the Revs. Chivas entered the game having undergone some serious struggle in recent weeks. They were stout at the onset, but Shuttleworth was on point in net for the Revs. The Revs defense thwarted several attacks. The balls that did get through were turned aside as Shuttleworth recorded his eight shutout of the season on four saves.
Charlie Davies nearly scored in the game’s third minute. Nguyen placed a towering lead pass into the box, but Davies was unable to chip it home.
Nguyen had a great scoring bid in the 36th minute. He closed in on goal without disturbance after Diego Fagundez was able to find him. Nguyen put the shot just wide of the frame.
Chivas came awfully close to tying the game in the 72nd minute. Nathan Sturgis found Erick Torres in front of Shuttleworth for a prime chance. Torres beat him, but the ball richocheted wide of the net.
The Revs improved to 9-12-3 on the season. They now trail the New York Red Bulls by just one point for the fifth and final playoff spot. They’ll visit Toronto FC next Saturday. It’ll be another must win contest considering the Revs trail them by two points in the standings.
