Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz will be back in the lineup Wednesday night against the Toronto Blue Jays after missing the first two games of the series with a foot injury. Outfielder Yoenis Cespedes will be sitting the game out. The Red Sox will look to complete a three-game sweep when they hit the field at the Rogers Center.
Ortiz fouled a pitch off his foot during an at-bat in Sunday’s game against the Seattle Mariners. Ortiz was removed from the game after he failed to make it down the first-base line on a pop fly during a later plate appearance.
When asked about the incident, Ortiz said the pain in his foot was so bad that he though it was broken. Monday Ortiz said the pain and swelling had subsided a bit after taking some anti-inflammatories. Apparently two days of rest and recovery was sufficient enough. John Farrell has Ortiz penciled into the lineup as the DH batting out of three hole.
Cespedes’ absence from the lineup is nothing more than a routine day off. He’s not injured. Allen Craig will play right field in place of him. Craig hit his first home run in a Red Sox uniform is Tuesday night’s 11-7 drumming of the Jays. He’ll bat sixth in the lineup.
Joe Kelly will take the ball for the Red Sox. He’ll look to complete the three-game sweep opposite Toronto’s Marcus Stroman. Stroman has allowed just one run in two starts against Boston this season. Kelly is 0-1 with the Red Sox thus far this season.
First pitch in the ballgame is slated for 7:07 p.m.
