The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees will rekindle their fierce, long-standing rivalry on Friday night in the Bronx. The two sides will square off in a three-game set that marks the beginning of a 19-game season series.

Playing in the highly-competitive American League East, both the Red Sox and Yankees missed out on postseason play a year ago for the first time in 21 seasons. After some serious roster re-tooling over the winter, these historic clubs have their eyes set on a return to prominence in 2015.

One of Boston’s new additions, starting pitcher Wade Miley, will make his Red Sox debut on Friday. Newcomers Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval will look to take advantage of the hitter-friendly Yankee Stadium. Ramirez blasted a grand slam on Opening Day in his team debut.

For the Yankees, future hall-of-fame shortstop Derek Jeter, will no longer prove to be a thorn in the side of Boston. New York brought in former Arizona Diamondback Didi Gregorius to replace their former captain. Although one familiar face will be in the lineup and that’s Alex Rodriguez. He is back following his one-year ban from baseball.

More from Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox are fresh off a series victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in which they won two games. The Yankees on the other hand had some struggles with the Toronto Blue Jays, dropping two of three to begin the new season.

David Ortiz is one guy the Red Sox would like to see get hot. He has torched the Yankees over his last 12 games, tallying five homers and 13 RBIs. Ortiz struggled in Boston’s opening series, picking up just one hit in seven plate appearances. He struck out five times.

Clay Buchholz and Masahiro Tanaka are expected to oppose on another in the closing game of the series on Sunday Night Baseball. Buchholz blanked the Phillies in his last start. Tanaka was batted around by the Blue Jays.

The Yankees defeated the Red Sox 12 times in 19 games last season.
