Red Sox Demote Rusney Castillo Amid Roster Shuffle
The Boston Red Sox demoted their multi-million dollar outfielder, Rusney Castillo, to Triple-A Pawtucket on Tuesday. Knuckleball specialist Steven Wright was optioned down as well, in order to make way for right-hander Justin Masterson, and newly-acquired catcher Erik Kratz.
Everyone knew Castillo’s demotion was coming sooner rather than later. He was downright disappointing in his time with the Red Sox. He hit just .230 with one homer and six RBIs in 77 plate appearances.
Castillo’s suspect defensive play and questionable decisions on the base-paths have left all of Red Sox nation, including team management, questioning whether he was worth the hefty investment. The 27-year-old has provided no reason to feel encouraged regarding his development as a major league player.

It would appear as if Brock Holt will see the majority of the reps in right field while Shane Victorino continues to work his way back from injury. Alejandro De Aza is certainly a viable candidate to see some time out there as well. Let’s not forget Jackie Bradley is patiently waiting in Pawtucket for another crack in the bigs.
Wright was solid for the Red Sox. He posted a 4.15 ERA in 11 appearances and started in four games. Something had to give though, as Masterson was activated off the 15-day disabled list. The lanky hurler struggled as a starter, posting a 6.37 ERA. Eduardo Rodriguez had replaced him in the rotation and will remain their as Masterson will now pitch out of the bullpen.

Kratz was added to the squad over the weekend after the Kansas City Royals let him go. With Blake Swihart sidelined with a temporary foot ailment, the Red Sox are left with just Sandy Leon at the catcher spot. Fellow catchers Christian Vazquez and Ryan Hannigan are both already on the disabled list. Kratz will serve as an emergency catcher for Leon while Swihart returns to full health.
The Red Sox and Orioles kick off a three-game series at Fenway Park on Tuesday night.
