David Price earned his 17th win of the season as the Boston Red Sox increased their winning streak to eight games.

The Boston Red Sox continue to roll over AL East opponents.  David Price was once against solid leading the Red Sox to a 5-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles to complete a four-game sweep.  It was Price’s eight straight victory as well as the team’s eighth consecutive win to extend their lead in the AL East to 5 ½ games.

Price (17-8) gave up just three runs and six hits in seven innings pitched.  His five strikeouts were a little low for Price, but he has  shown in his last nine starts that he is the front-line starter the Red Sox thought they had when they signed him.

Price’s only mistake came in the third inning.  Staked to a 3-0 lead, the left-handed pitcher gave up a game-tying three-run homer to Orioles rookie Trey Mancini.  After that mishap he did settle down in what he described as a big victory for his team.

“That was a big win,” he said after the game.  “We’ve played good baseball, and this is the time of the year when you want your team to get on a roll the way we have, and that’s what we’ve done.”

More from Boston Red Sox

Offensive attack at Camden Yards: The Red Sox offense got to Orioles starter Chris Tillman early.  They scored three runs on five hits.  Hot slugger Hanley Ramirez drove in one of those runs in the first inning.  The Red Sox added two runs in the second inning. Boston got its go ahead run in fifth off a two-out RBI single off the bat of phenom Andrew Benintendi.

Ramirez continued his hot streak in the seventh inning with a blast into the stands of Camden Yards.  It was his 29th homer of the season.  Most importantly, it gave the Red Sox an insurance run in rout to the 5-3 victory.

Boston looking to clinch division crown with more solid pitching

Magic number: In completing their second consecutive four-game sweep, the Red Sox magic number has dwindled to just five games.  And with the Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays facing off, the Red Sox could clinch the division in the upcoming week.

Call to the bullpen: Koji Uehara and Craig Kimbrel worked the eight and ninth innings respectively.  Both recorded scoreless innings and are demonstrating how solid Boston relief pitching is in those late innings.

Drew Pomeranz: The lefty hopes to follow Price, Clay Buccholz, Eduardo Rodriguez and Rick Porcello in delivering solid starts for the Red Sox.  Pomeranz opens up the series against the Tampa Bay Rays with a 2-5 record and a 4.91 ERA.
