New England Patriots tight end Martellus Bennett gave an interesting answer when he was asked whether the team was playing with a chip on their shoulder.

Martellus Bennett is far and away the most outspoken player in the Patriots locker room…and the most entertaining.  On Thursday, the tight end was asked if the team playing with a chip on their shoulder, especially with the return of Tom Brady.

Bennett may have said too much with his answer, but as only he can do, he found a way to distract from the original answer.

More from New England Patriots

“We just try to continue to do what we’ve been doing,” Bennett told reporters via WEEI.  “Just win games.  I think every guy’s played with a chip on his shoulder this entire season, so I don’t think that’s going to change.”

With the assumption that Bennett was referring to Brady’s four-game suspension for his role in Deflategate and the team sticking it to NFL Commissioner Roger Goddell, Bennett immediately deflected.

“That’s just who we are as human being,” Bennett contined.  “You can’t play this game without a chip on your shoulder.  Whether it’s guys that got cut, guys that got traded, guys that feel like they got passed by other teams – to play this game, you’ve got to have a chip.  And everybody’s chip is a little bit different.

Deflecting even further, Bennett referred to Lay’s potato chips to get his point across.  Some like sour cream and some like barbecue.  Whatever kind of chip, it helps a player get through a game.  But the talented tight end had to take at least one shot at the comminssioner.  He added that Goddell “looks like a Pringle guy.”  He doesn’t consider those chips.

Whichever chip Bennett has been playing with, it has been paying off for the Patriots.  His production and worth ethic through the first four games has taken some of the focus off Rob Gronkowski.  He has caught 15 passes for 245 yards and a touchdown with two 100-yard receiving games mixed in there.  With Brady back, those numbers will only continue.  And what Gronkowski gets back to full strength, watch out!

One has to wonder what kind of chip Martellus Bennett thinks Gronkowski represents.
