Patriots Needed A Game Like The Sunday Night Football Loss To The Seahawks

After last night’s 31-24 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, it was difficult to come up with any positives from the game, or a reason why they played possibly the worst “Patriots game” in recent memory. But in the long run, I think this loss will do the team good as they know where they need to get better.

Defense

The name of the game last night was defense and turnovers from the Patriots side of the ball. The Jamie Collins-less defense allowed the Seahawks score on 7/9 possessions (doesn’t include the final drive). Yes that is not good on paper but there were some MVP’esk throws by Russell Wilson where he would place the ball exactly where he needed to. Especially on some of his throws to Tyler Locket along the sidelines.

But a majority of it came from blown coverages by the Patriots corners. The TD by Doug Baldwin to close out the 1st half when the Seahawks went 75 yards in 59 seconds. On that Touch Down, Logan Ryan was on him but he went off of him and Patrick Chung was supposed to get on him. This led to him being open by at least 10 yards.

More from New England Patriots

The Zone defense they were playing last night wasn’t working. Period. There was a lack of communication all around and it led to Seattle receivers to be open all night. In the past when the Patriots had a lack of confidence in their defense, they would try to hold onto the ball as long as possible.

Seattle had the ball only 50 seconds longer then the Patriots. Seemed a lot more lopsided then that but that could be due to their lack of ability to get off the field when they needed to.

Turnovers

The Patriots turned the ball over last night twice. Seems weird to say that but they did. One was on possibly the worst throw of Brady’s career right to Deshawn Shead. The most infuriating part of that play, you had LeGarrette Blount wide open just outside the numbers to Brady’s blind side on that play.

The other turnover was what seemed to turn the momentum around in Seattle’s favor. In the 4th quarter when Edelman fumbled the ball after Seattle took a 25-24 lead, he needed to go down.

He had Kam Chancellor, one of the best safeties in the league, on top of him. He ripped the ball out of his arms. In that situation he needs to realize that that type of play cannot happen. I love when he gets those extra yards doing that but when you have Kam Chancellor on top of you, you need to get down.

This was the type of game that will show the Patriots what they can’t do going forward. I think it will help them out in the long run as they don’t make the same mistake twice. If they do, they’re cut.
