The Boston Red Sox may be looking to beef up their starting rotation with the addition of Chris Sale, but only if the price is right.

David Price, Rick Porcello and Chris Sale?  That’s how the Boston Red Sox front-end rotation would look like if the team could pull off a major deal this offseason involving the Chicago White Sox ace.

The Red Sox haven’t done anything yet, but a deal involving Chris Sale alone would be a win for the team and make them clear-cut favorites to represent the American League in the 2017 World Series.  Per Jon Heyman of FanRagSports, Boston would have to compete with five other teams in pulling off a deal for Sale.

Among those teams are the Washington Nationals, Houston Astros, Atlanta Braves, Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Dodgers.  The Red Sox have the resources to entice the White Sox, but will they be willing to part with a Jackie Bradley Jr. or Yoan Moncada?  They certainly have enough young players already contributing on the major league level to survive without either player.

Sale, who is a perennial Cy Young contender, has three years ($38 million) left on his contract and would come with a team-friendly deal at this point in his career. A trade for Sale would not only give the Red Sox a solid starting rotation, he could ultimately replace Price as the top ace if the left hander does not work out in Boston and opts out of his contract.

While the team is hesitant to part ways with Bradley Jr., if Moncada and perhaps another prospect is all it will take to land Chris Sale, Dave Dombrowski should pull the trigger that would pair probably one of the best pitching rotations with baseball’s best offense.

Last season, Sale started 32 games.  He had a record of 17-10 with an ERA of 3.34 to go along with 233 strikeouts.  Even if he equals that production in Boston, the Red Sox would be a tough team to beat in the playoffs.  Of course, both Price and Porcello would have to get their act together in the postseason.
