The New England Patriots have reportedly inquired about free agent wide receiver DeSean Jackson.

Looks like the New England Patriots are trying to add another target for Tom Brady to throw touchdown passes to.  As reported by Mike Jones of the Washington Post, the team has kicked the tires on speedy wide receiver DeSean Jackson.

According to the report, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys have also showed interest in the 30-year-old Jackson.  While those teams need a wide out, the Patriots’ interest in Jackson is unexpected, especially since they appear to be looking for younger receivers.

At the same time, when a player like Jackson becomes available, a team like the Patriots should sniff around to see if they entice him with a team-friendly deal.  That, however, doesn’t appear likely in Jackson’s case.  Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole tweeted on Wednesday that the dynamic wide out is looking for a big pay day, asking for over $11 million per year.

The Super Bowl champions will not go that high for Jackson, especially with Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan, Malcolm Mitchell and Danny Amendola currently under contract.  The thought is entertaining though, but there are cheaper options for New England.

The team continues to inquire about New Orleans Saints wide receiver Brandin Cooks.  And with free agency set to get underway on Thursday (March 9), there will be bargain outside options available like Kenny Britt, Pierre Garcon and Robert Woods.  New England has also expressed interest in re-signing Michael Floyd, who is currently serving time in jail for an DUI arrest towards the end of the NFL season.
