On the final day of the NFL Draft, the New England Patriots selected another defensive end in Arkansas’ Deatrich Wise.

The New England Patriots addressed their pass rush need with Derek Rivers yesterday in round three. In round four they added another depth player.

Deatrich Wise will compete for playing time on the edge with Rivers, Rob Ninkovich and Kony Ealy.

On the day, the Patriots have also made a trade. New England sent a fifth-round pick to Kansas City to acquire tight end James O’Shaughnessy and a sixth round pick. New England gave up pick 183 and got pick 216 in addition to O’Shaughnessy.

As of now, the Patriots have two picks left: 216 (sixth round) and 239 (seventh).

The Patriots clearly felt a need to address the pass rush, and they have made stellar selections with Wise and Rivers. As always, here is Lance Zierlein’s take on Wise.

"“Slow-twitch power player with rare physical attributes but a lack of functional athleticism to chalk up a stat sheet. Might have been miscast as a 4-3 defensive end considering his lack of quickness and rush talent. But his length and power at the point of attack could make him an attractive Day 3 (Rounds 4-7) draft option for 3-4 teams looking for a two-gapping defensive end with the traits to bounce back from a disappointing senior season.”"

Clearly Wise will have some work to do, but with the players in front of him (Rivers, Ninkovich, Ealy, Flowers) he will have the time to develop. Look out for Wise though in clear pass rush situations.
