Anthony Davis in a Boston Celtics uniform would be simply amazing

With the No.1 pick in the 2017 NBA draft and a ton of assets, could the Boston Celtics find a way to swing a deal for Anthony Davis?

The rumors are out there, but why would the New Orleans Pelicans even consider such a deal? Like Talar Kahwajian wrote last week, the Boston Celtics swinging a deal for Anthony Davis sound nice. But in reality, such a deal happening is ridiculous.

That doesn’t mean the Celtics don’t have what it takes to obtain a player like Davis.  Along with this year’s No. 1 overall pick and another potential high lottery pick in 2018, the Celtics have some young players of interest to the Pelicans.

Like the Kevin Garnett deal back in 2017, Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge could offer the Pelicans some players with NBA experience and upside.

If New Orleans has any thought of resetting, obtaining players like Marcus Smart, Terry Rozier, Avery Bradley and the contract of a Tyler Zeller could become enticing.  Of course, the team would have to be willing to build around DeMarcus Cousins (if they can sign him long term).

Why a team would give up on an opportunity on a potentially dominant frontcourt of Davis and Cousins is beyond me, but you never know how the business side of the NBA will dictate player transactions.

The Pelicans are also in a need of draft picks as mentioned by CSN’s A. Sherrod Blakely.

As we know, the Boston Celtics have plenty of them.  In acquiring any of the players named above, along with multiple draft picks (including this year’s No. 1 overall), New Orleans would an opportunity to fill its roster with talent.  This would be ideal for a team deciding to rebuild and start over.

Davis in green would be amazing

Ridiculous as it may sound, the Celtics may just have the package necessary to bring the 24-year-old big man to Boston.

At 6-foot-11, the 11.8 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game alone would give the Celtics the rim protector they are desperately in need of.  Add the 28 points per game he adds to the front court and suddenly Boston gives the Cleveland Cavaliers a team in the Eastern conference to think about.

Sure, the Boston Celtics would have to give up a few players on the roster to get him.  But imagine if Isaiah Thomas plays for less than a max deal and the team signs Gordon Hayward.

That would give Brad Stevens a core of Thomas, Al Horford, Davis and Hayward.  They may even be able to keep some variation of Brown, Smart, Rozier, Crowder or Bradley.  Even if they have to give up more, there are enough veterans in the league willing to play for less to win.

Ainge did it in 2007-08 with players like Eddie House and James Posey.  He could certainly do it again.  However, he has also made it clear that he wants to win for the next 10 years.

Anthony Davis would make that possible, giving up what they would have to give up to obtain him wouldn’t.  As amazing as it would be, the overall reality of what the deal entails suggests a deal that won’t happen.

We are allowed to dream though.
