Is Hanley Ramirez’s time in a Red Sox uniform coming to an end?

Seventeen years ago Hanley Ramirez signed as an international free agent for the Boston Red Sox, could his time here now be coming to an end?

Hanley Ramirez made his Major League debut with the Boston Red Sox in 2005 where he was destined to shine. Just a few months later he was traded down to The Florida Marlins (now known as the Miami Marlins).

That trade shifted the course of history for the Boston Red Sox, as they landed an ace in the shape of Josh Beckett they so desperately needed and the ever so reliable 3B Mike Lowell. Now, Boston may need to move on from Ramirez again.

Hanley was a different player twelve years ago. He stole 102 bases in his first two seasons in the bigs, which I can’t even begin to imagine when I look at his current physical state. With his power, speed and love for the game, Hanley Ramirez was everything you wanted in a star player. Of

Of course, the Red Sox would have loved his production in replacement of SS Julio Lugo, and the clean fielding Alex Gonzalez. But in the end, they got their World Series title and a beer-loving Josh Beckett.

Now let’s get to my main point. It’s 2017 and the Boston Red Sox are in first place. Look’s great on the outside.

But if you’re a fan of this team you still have to be wondering what lies ahead for our beloved Boston Red Sox. Their offense has been lackluster, their defense has been terrible, and our Cy Young award winner can’t get a two-seamer by a little leaguer. What has been our strength has been our bullpen. With a streak of 22+ innings pitched without giving up a run, which in the end was ruined by the one and only Heath Hembree.

Great expectations dwindling

Craig Kimbrel has been unhittable. Then, there is Hanley Ramirez. His lack of ability to play the field and give more flexibility to the lineup is really putting them in a bind. On nights you want to give Moreland a night off the field and spell him at DH, you’re unable to because Hanley has a sore shoulder all the time. He even got a sore neck because he looked to fast to speak to someone.

If David Ortiz had not been the greatest DH in history for the last 15 years we may not be even talking about making a change at DH. But we won’t and can’t change history. Ortiz left behind big expectations, expectations we expected to be filled after Hanley had a great season in 2016. Now that he’s barely involved in the action, he has yet to find any rhythm. He is simply trying to do way too much every pitch that comes his way. His home run down by the pesky pole was his best swing of the season, something he should try to do more of. Now that he’s barely involved in the action, he has yet to find any rhythm. He is simply trying to do way too much every pitch that comes his way. His home run down by the pesky pole was his best swing of the season, something he should try to do more of.

What is most shocking are his numbers against LHP’s. He is batting .143 against southpaws, which is not how that split should look at all. Just to throw a random stat out there, he hits .071 when playing on turf. So when it comes to important games in Tampa Bay or Toronto, should he even dress for the game?

The waiting game

I’m not doubting Hanley as a person, as I’m sure his injuries are causing discomfort, but at what point do you let a guy continue to hit so poorly in a position in which his only job is to hit? You can tell he loves Boston, and we love him. But at the end of the day, we need a winning ball club and a guy that can go up there and be consistent.

Check out Hanley Ramirez’s words in regards to people questioning his “injuries” and if he even enjoys playing in Boston anymore. Now let’s sit back and hope for the best for the rest of the season.

You can tell he loves Boston, and we love him, but at the end of the day, we need a winning ball club and a guy that can go up there and give consistent at-bats. With the looming hopeful release of Pablo Sandoval would the Red Sox dare and cut ties with Hanley as well? Probably not.

Next: Chris Sale is still hot

I do believe they should put Hanley on the disabled list until after the all-star break, and just pray you get something out of him in the second half. They obviously need to make a move at 3B, but they might just need to find a second power bat, if Sam Travis can’t be that guy off the bench. I fully expect Hanley to be moved in the 2017 off-season by dealing Dave Dombrowski.
