Just a week after picking up Corey Coleman, the New England Patriots already moved on from him. Now, another Browns receiver enters the rotation, Josh Gordon.

It took one game for the New England Patriots to realize that Corey Coleman will not fit in their system.

Against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the former Cleveland Brown was basically inactive during the contest, although I do wonder what would have happened if he had played. The Patriots embarrassingly lost 31-20 and was outplayed on all facets. Either way, I was wrong about the Coleman acquisition, and I admit that. It’s tough to get a gauge on certain things when Bill Belichick is the head coach.

On the flip side, New England undoubtedly received an upgrade at the position by giving Cleveland a fifth round pick for Josh Gordon. According to cbssports.com, the Browns promised to part ways with Gordon by Monday, which ended up being spot-on. There’s a wrinkle to this trade as well. The Pats will receive a 2019 seventh-round pick if Gordon is not active on the roster after ten days, according to ESPN.

Hopefully this time around, the Patriots will at least attempt to utilize the former second-round pick. Unlike Coleman, Gordon  was able to produce big numbers with incompetent quarterbacks. In 2013, with Brandon Weeden and Jason Campbell as the starters, Gordon obtained an incredible 1646 yards receiving on 87 receptions (which was most in the league), according to Pro Football-Reference.

Not to mention, he did that in only 14 games! Unfortunately, because of multiple suspensions due to violating the substance abuse policy, Gordon only had a little over 600 receiving yards from 2014 until now basically. He’s only played 11 total games throughout the past four years as well.

This trade is a low-risk, high-reward situation for the Pats, even more so than the Coleman pick-up. When Gordon is on the field, he’s one of the best WR in football. Nowadays, it’s not drug use, but rather a hamstring injury that’s kept him from playing. He apparently injured it while at a promotional photo shoot on Friday (I wonder how).

Undoubtedly, New England won this trade. At least in this direction, the Patriots will get something out of it. if they do end up releasing Josh Gordon, that seventh-round pick can be used to possibly get a hidden gem in the 2019 draft.

And if not, they’ll just be back to square one. Unlike most coaches however, Bill Belichick thrives in working with nothing.

Apparently, Gordon wanted to be traded to either the 49ers or Cowboys. He’s still got to be happy with ending up here though. As good as Jason Garrett and Kyle Shanahan are, Bill Belichick is the magnum opus of NFL coaches. There isn’t a better situation than that.

Surprisingly, the Jags defense managed to get Tom Brady out of his usual rhythm in the pocket in week 2, leading to plenty of check-down throws. Of his 24 completions, 13 went to running backs, while 11 were caught by wide receivers. It just shows how thin their corps is, even with Rob Gronkowski in the mix. Josh Gordon should mitigate some of those problems with his stellar route-running ability.

Julian Edelman still has two more games left on his own suspension. Hopefully, Gordon can fill that void, and then maybe work along side him for the rest of the year, battling for the number one spot again.

But who knows, that’s what I said about Coleman too, and look what happened. No one is safe in the New England Patriots system. Either way though, let’s welcome Josh Gordon.
