The New England Patriots are moving into new territory and Jakobi Meyers is a player that the team should be investing in.

There wasn’t a lot of great performances from the New England Patriots in 2020. A lot of players had difficult seasons, but Jakobi Meyers was one of the best players for New England.

Meyers was Cam Newton’s best option when passing the ball. With Julian Edelman out, Meyers stepped up and took over that top spot on the depth chart.

2020 was Meyers best season of his career. He had 59 catches for 729 yards. Meyers led the way for New England in the passing game.

Now that type of yardage is exactly what the Patriots want from their wideouts. He has also consistently averaged more than 10 yards per reception.

It’s clear that people around the NFL are starting to take notice. Pro Football Focus complied a list of the top wide receivers of the 2020 season and Meyers was able to crack the list. They even called him one of the most productive wide receivers in the NFL.

Now with the Patriots still looking for their QB of the future, they need to get younger. They need to start building an offense that will allow for a rookie to perform well immediately. That means keeping Meyers on the roster for the long term.

2021 will be the last season that Meyers is under contract. After that, he will become a restricted free agent.

Meyers will likely not cost a ton of money so the Patriots need to lock him up. If they lose Meyers their group of wide receivers will be rather weak.

So the Patriots need to ensure that Meyers is with the team for the foreseeable future. He will help ensure that the next man under center is in a position to succeed.

If not, the Patriots will have to get lucky in the draft or make a blockbuster move. With the team’s latest misses that seems rather unlikely.

Hopefully, the Patriots will give Meyers an offer soon so he can focus on putting up even better numbers in 2021.
