Even after Gordon Hayward’s terrible injury the Boston Celtics will be just fine this season.

Like everyone I was stunned when I saw the Gordon Hayward injury. It was terrible. Now add the fact that it was his first game as a Celtic that just punches you right in the gut. The Boston Celtics lost 102-99 but Celtics fans should still be excited about this season.

Surprise: Kyrie Irving is the real deal

Kyrie Irving had a pretty good start to his Celtics career. He boasted 22 points and 10 assists. The assists were something that stood out to me. Last season with the Cavs, Irving only had 8 games with 10 or more assists in a game. S

o to in your first game as a Celtic have a double-double that is rather impressive. It seems that Kyrie has bought into Brad’s system. We know how great Irving is in isolation but he appeared to buy into Steven’s system of moving the ball around.

Also when Kyrie reentered the game in the fourth quarter he showed his skills going 3/4 from 3 point range. For a player’s first game with a team, this was a good start but I expect Kyrie to have even better performances as the season progresses and he gets more comfortable with is teammates.

Jaylen and Jayson belong in the starting five

These two young guys had great games. Brown played a team-high 40 minutes and scored 25 points and 6 rebounds while Tatum scored 14 points and had 10 rebounds.

A lot of people were talking about how this is the year that Jaylen makes the jump. He was expected to be a big part of the team. This increases tenfold with the Hayward injury. Brown had a great performance especially since he was going up against Lebron. He continues to be a beast in the open floor and show the ability to be able to get to the basket. He struggled covering Lebron but James is one of the best players in the NBA so let’s give him a break.

Tatum had an impressive start for a rookie. His stat line was eerily similar to a Boston sports legend.

Tatum is indeed not Larry Bird but his debut was impressive. Especially considering he is a 19-year-old going up against the Cleveland Cavaliers and Lebron James. Tatum may have had a few jitters in the beginning of the game but played great in the second half.

More from Chowder and Champions

With a performance like that it looks like he is making his case to be rookie of the year. Especially since he will be getting even more minutes due to the Hayward injury.

The Bench

The Celtics bench had a few stars emerge. Marcus Smart continues to be the ultimate hustle player. He struggled in the first half but really helped out the team in the second half. He played great defense and took advantage when the Cavs had Kyle Korver covering him. With Korver on him, Smart was able to easily to muscle his way into the paint. He ended the game with 12 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks. With the loss of Hayward, it appears that Smart will be getting an increased role entering the starting five.

I also felt that Aron Baynes was solid off the bench being able to make his presence known rebounding. Also, Terry Rozier did alright with 9 points and shooting 100% from the free throw line.
