The New England Patriots will be the home team in Super Bowl LII as they take on the Philadelphia Eagles in Minneapolis, MN on February 4th.

Football fans often wonder who the home team will be in the Super Bowl, but here is your answer. The New England Patriots will have that designation on February 4th for Super Bowl LII. That’s because the AFC and NFC swap each year, and this time the AFC is up. The game will be played in Minneapolis, Minn. at the new U.S. Bank Stadium.

With the home designation, the Patriots will have their choice of uniform for the game. They can choose to wear either their traditional home set (blue jersey, silver pants) or they may choose to go with their away set that they won last season’s Super Bowl in (white jersey, blue pants).

In the Brady Belichick era, the Patriots have been designated as the home team in 4 of the 8 games. In those 4 games, they are 2-2, with both losses coming at the hands of the New York Giants. New England is 4-0 in teams where they have been the away team, including their two most recent Super Bowl wins in 2014 and 2016.

The Patriots have never bucked the traditional home-road uniform trend for the Super Bowl. In each game that they have been listed as the home team, they have worn their home blue uniforms. In their away games, they have always worn white. Maybe that will change this year though.

The white jersey is viewed as lucky in the Super Bowl. 12 of the last 13 Super Bowl champions has worn white, including some teams that were designated as the home team. That list includes three Patriots wins, two Steelers wins, two Giants wins, as well as a win each for the Colts, Saints, Ravens, Seahawks, and Broncos. The last team to win the big game in a home jersey in the team’s primary color was the Green Bay Packers and Aaron Rodgers in Super Bowl XLV in February 2011.

New England should think long and hard before they chose what uniform they want to put on in two weeks in Super Bowl LII.

The other aspect of the home-away designation is that the Eagles will be the ones calling the coin toss. The Patriots love to defer if they win, but that coin toss will be in Philly’s hands.
