Boston Bruins player review: Torey Krug was terrific in 2018

The Boston Bruins defenseman had an interesting 2018 campaign, but when Torey Krug was on, he was one of the best defenders on the B’s.

Torey Krug’s season ended horrifically. He barely could make it off the ice after crashing into the boards. Krug was playing great for the Boston Bruins in the postseason and was one of the teams best players.

Krug’s regular season was great as well. He was one of the best defenseman on the team. Krug isn’t known for being the greatest in his own zone, but he gets the job done. Krug makes his money in the opposing team’s zone.

This was Krug’s best season as a pro. He tallied 14 goals and 45 assists (a career high). Krug was the point man for the B’s powerplay and was fantastic.

The only downside to Krug is his defensive play. It’s hard to be a 5’9″ defenseman in the NHL, but Krug tends to get the job done. His biggest detractor is that he is prone to make some dumb turnovers. He had a rough start to the season with a rating of -10 through the teams first 8 games.

In the postseason Krug was one of the Bruins best players. He was a top 5 scorer for the B’s and was actually performing well in the Bruins zone.

Krug amassed 3 goals and 9 assists before his season came crashing down. He will be spending his offseason rehabbing his fractured left ankle.

A long offseason

Krug will be resting and rehabbing this summer and should be ready for the start of training camp in September. When he returns Krug will be the cornerstone of the Bruins 2nd d-pairing. It will be interesting to see who is paired with Krug. With Brandon Carlo returning I hope to see him return alongside Krug. This would mean that Adam McQuaid or Kevan Miller would be watching games from the 9th floor.

Torey Krug makes up for his lack of size with heart and great offensive ability. He needs to work on playing a cleaner game and not committing as many turnovers. Hopefully next season Krug will return to form and won’t be phased by his ankle injury. The Boston Bruins will need his offensive skill if they want to make a run for the Stanley Cup.
