The Boston Red Sox concluded the 2014 MLB draft by taking 30 players on day 3. Many of the players selected possess high upside and could develop nicely within the system. Others may simply go unsigned. 41 players in total were taken by the club over the course of the three-day event.
Boston drafted some players who fell into the late rounds due to injury, including right-handed pitcher Karsten Whitson, who was the former 9th overall pick in the 2010 draft. Whitson decided to attend college instead of signing within the San Diego Padres system. Shoulder injuries forced him to fall this year.
We also saw the Red Sox target many high school standouts who will have to prove they have the ability to play at the professional level.
The 30 picks made by Boston are comprised of 13 pitchers, seven infielders, five catchers and five outfielders. In addition to Saturday’s picks, the Red Sox previously added 3 players on day 1 of the draft and another 8 on day 2.
At the end of the day, the Red Sox ultimately bolstered their organizational pitching depth and potential in this year’s draft. They also acquired many positional players who have shown promise. Though a long road certainly awaits each of the youngsters.
