WEEI Throws Punches At Former Host Mike Salk

For those who listen to WEEI, the past 3 1/2 years have been a turnstile in terms of hosts and programs, it all started in February 2011 when hosts and shows started to change. From 10:00am to 2:00pm Dale Arnold and Michael Holley hosted the afternoon radio slot at WEEI and while the show did solid numbers, especially against 98.5’s ‘Gresh and Zo’ program, Arnold and Holley were broken up in February 2011.

Holley was going to join the 2:00pm to 6:00pm show featuring longtime radio host Glenn Ordway in an attempt to shake up the afternoon drive program for WEEI. That particular time slot was a struggle for WEEI as they faced off against 98.5’s ‘Felger and Mazz’ program, and the thought of adding Holley was to bring over the success of the ‘Dale and Holley’ program to the afternoon time slot.

The duo worked well but the station was still not impressed with the change so in March 2013, Seattle radio host Mike Salk moved cross-country to replace the fired Ordway and join Holley for the ‘Salk and Holley’ program. It was clear very early on that the chemistry between the two just wasn’t there and even though Salk brought a new voice to the Boston airwaves, fans of the station weren’t impressed with what they were hearing.

The duo of Salk and Holley lasted just one year when in March 2014, Salk announced that he was heading back to Seattle as a program director and radio host. The move left WEEI without an afternoon drive host for some time, but in mid-2014 Dale Arnold returned to join Holley in the afternoon program reuniting the ‘Dale and Holley’ program.

That brings us to this past Sunday when Salk along with tens of thousands traveled to CenturyLink Field in Seattle to watch the Seahawks and Packers battle it out in the NFC Championship. Salk, who has made it painfully clear that his time in Boston was a disaster, took another shot at WEEI during his broadcast this week.

Thankfully we had Dennis and Callahan (featuring Kirk Minihane) respond to Salk’s remarks (Note: Even though it is almost 20 minutes long, it’s well worth it).

Hearing Salk talk about almost crying during a two-point conversion was bad enough, I mean for god sakes your team was dead in the final minutes of the game and if it wasn’t for a bonehead play by Brandon Bostick Seattle would be watching Super Bowl XLIXX from home. But then to hear him talk about how coming to Boston was a mistake was just painful to listen to

“I’ll admit I [cried] and maybe for me at all that it once was sort of my journey over the last couple years where I’ve been and how I’ve missed last year and how incredibly awful that was for me I was really upset about it.”

-Mike Salk

Puke, just puke Mike Salk. Whomever at WEEI thought it was a good idea to bring you to Boston to replace a guy like Glenn Ordway, must be a certified lunatic. Thinking that this guy could come in and try to blend in to a town where we can see right through people who are just putting up a fake persona, and today was just further proof that Mike Salk never fit in Boston.

It’s a shame too because while Salk was in Boston there were so many memorable and important storylines going on in Boston, you had the Boston Marathon tragedy, the Aaron Hernandez controversy, the 2013 Stanley Cup the Red Sox turnaround and eventual World Series championship. Even with all those powerful headlines, Salk still couldn’t connect with the fan base around New England and even his co-workers which is just further proof that he is not a very good fit in here and frankly not an adequate radio personality to begin with.

I wish I could be in Seattle to see if there is any sort of meeting between Salk and WEEI, I would love to see Salk squirm if he saw Michael Holley, Kirk Minihane or anyone from the station really.

But let’s be honest: he’ll still be wiping away his tears.
