10. Traded 2005 6th round pick and 2005 7th round pick for 2005 7th round pick and 2006 5th round pick

This is a typical “make something out of nothing Belichick trade. This is the combination of two trades, however they involved the Patriots’ original picks from the 2005 NFL draft.

First, the coach dealt the 195th and 246th picks to the Green Bay Packers to acquire the 175th pick in the 2005 draft. The Oakland Raiders wanted to get this pick, the first in the sixth round, to draft Anttaj Hawthorne.

Hawthorne played just 18 games over two years and was cut without ever starting for Oakland. In the trade, the Raiders sent a 2006 pick to Foxboro that ended up becoming the third pick of the fifth round.

New England used that pick on offensive tackle Ryan O’Callaghan, but the guy they chose in 2005 at 230 was QB Matt Cassel, who was a big help in Tom Brady‘s lost 2008 season.

9. Traded 2013 1st round pick for a TON of picks from the Vikings

During the 2013 NFL Draft Bill Belichick made yet another move down the board. The Minnesota Vikings badly wanted New England’s pick to select WR Cordarrelle Patterson out of the University of Tennessee.

Of the number of picks the Patriots gained from Minnesota, two are extremely notable. New England selected LB Jamie Collins (recently shipped off to Cleveland), and CB Logan Ryan. Collins made an immediate impact on the Patriots defense with his athletic ability, while Ryan remains a solid number two corner for the team.
