Patriot’s Day Scenes: A Boston Holiday Like No Other, From the Marathon to the Red Sox Early Game and The Bruins Comeback Effort
Patriot’s Day is a holiday in only Massachusetts and Maine. The rest of the country just doesn’t understand it’s significance.
The Boston Marathon begins in the morning, and the Boston Red Sox first pitch comes just after 11 AM.
This year, we also had a Boston Bruins playoff game at TD Garden.
The 121st running of the marathon and both sports games had plenty of action. These are the best scenes and highlights from all three events.
The Boston Marathon
The 121st Boston Marathon was run today as a large crowd gathered along the entire 26.2-mile route. The Kenyan duo of Geoffrey Kirui and Edna Kiplagat took home a sweep for their country. The men’s victory for Kirui was the first for Kenya in five years.
Other runs though, and those with signs, stole the show. Including Jose Sanchez, a Marine who lost his left leg in Afghanistan in 2011.

Former Boston Bruins player Bobby Carpenter ran with former Boston Pride hockey player Denna Liang.
Another historic moment came with Kathrine Switzer’s finish. Switzer finished the marathon again, 50 years after becoming the first ever woman to officially run the marathon.
As always Boston Police Commissioner William Evans completed the marathon as well.
Red Sox Defeat the Rays 4-3
The Boston Red Sox began their game early at 11 AM on Monday, a Patriot’s Day tradition. Donning their special “Boston” jerseys, they defeated the visiting Tampa Bay Rays 4-3. The team honored the Women’s National Hockey Team before the game.
Steven Wright earned the win after a rocky 2-run first inning for Tampa.
Rookie Andrew Benintendi was on fire today as he went 3-4 at the plate.
Craig Kimbrel then came in to earn his third straight save in the series.
Bruins Comeback Falls Short
The Boston Bruins were down 3-0 early in the 2nd period and it looked like they would be down 2-1 in the series with the Ottawa Senators without a doubt, but they fought back.
The B’s got on the board with a goal from Noel Acciari. It was Acciari’s first playoff goal in his career.
David Backes scored his first ever Bruins playoff goal just 42 seconds later.

David Pastrnak scored the tying goal on an assist from Charlie McAvoy with 6 minutes left to play in the 2nd.

The game was tied after three and the teams headed to overtime. Unfortunately Ottawa notched the game winner and took a 2-1 series lead. Boston has now dropped two in a row and has their backs against the wall.
