GAME 1: May 12th – Friday: Rays @ Red Sox 7:10 PM (EST)

Probable Pitchers:

  • Boston – (R) Rick Porcello (2-4) (3.95 ERA) (1.32 WHIP)
  • Tampa Bay – (R) Alex Cobb (2-3) (3.56 ERA) (1.30 WHIP)

Rick Porcello has struggled early this season, which isn’t usual for a former AL Cy Young winner. There was some debate last year that Porcello’s record may not have reflected how good he is because Boston provided a tremendous amount of run support. In his last 2 starts, he has only allowed 3 earned runs in 13 innings pitched, while striking out 13 batters.

Porcello may actually be a big part of why the Red Sox do or don’t make the playoffs. With David Price still out, Steven Wright out for the season, Porcello needs to continue to pitch well. Boston can’t rely solely on Chris Sale, Eduardo Rodriquez is still growing and Pomeranz is pitching well but inconsistent.

Prediction: Win

Tampa’s middle of the pack offense won’t faze Porcello, Alex Cobb is no pushover though. The Ray’s lineup in predominately left-handed batters so Porcello will have his work cut out for him. I think the Red Sox just speak by  Tampa to win game 1!

  • Red Sox 5 – Rays 4
  • (W) Porcello
  • (L) Alex Cobb
