Last season, New England Patriots CB Cyrus Jones struggled. In his 2017 debut, things didn’t look much better defensively.

Yikes. Good luck making this New England Patriots squad Cyrus Jones, because I think your time in Foxboro is coming to an end.

After a horrible rookie season, which Jones admitted to, 2017 was supposed to provide a fresh start for the corner back and return man. Instead, he looked just as bad in his 2017 preseason debut against the lowly Jaguars.

In Thursday night’s game, Cyrus Jones was targeted by Jacksonville quarterbacks 4 times. He gave up three receptions for 151 yards and 2 touchdowns. One of those scores was a 97-yard play to Keelan Cole from Chad Henne. For some insight, Kenny Moore was the next worst in coverage, allowing 19 yards through the air for the Jaguars.

Later in the game, former Heisman Trophy finalist Dede Westbrook torched Jones, though it could have also been a blown coverage from the safety Jordan Richards. Either way, it’s not a good look for Jones. There’s no way that Westbrook or Cole should have been able to create that much separation against a second-year corner.

Making matters worse for Jones was that he didn’t impress in the return game either. After getting beat for one of those touchdowns, he was sent out on the kick return and didn’t even make it past the 10-yard line.

After the game, Jones refused to meet with the media to discuss his poor play.

Cyrus Jones is going to be cut before week 1 of the NFL season, and I’m not sure what team is going to want to acquire his “skills”.

Next: Hollister and Carr could battle for final roster spot

New England could experiment with Austin Carr as a return man, which would allow them to keep him on the roster even with a crowded wide receiving corps. If Carr can make it as a returner, that would certainly be the end of Cyrus Jones in Foxboro, and I’d be so glad to see him go. Jones has no place on this team, because he can’t defend, and he isn’t making a splash returning. Good day, Mr. Jones!
