Zach Solow, a true freshman from Naples, Florida, is leading the Northeastern Huskies offense through two games so far in 2017.

Zach Solow, an 18-year old freshman at Northeastern, is leading what may be the best offense in the nation. The Huskies exploded for 14 goals over the weekend, and Solow was right in the middle of it all.

In the Huskies first game of the season against Sacred Heart, Solow tallied 1 goal and 3 assists. The next day, he added 2 goals. Those 6 points have Solow tied atop the college hockey leaderboard with Boston University’s Patrick Harper and Michigan Tech’s Mark Auk. Auk though has played in 3 games already.

It’s got to be a nice feeling for Solow to get off to this hot start since he went undrafted in the 2017 NHL Draft this past June. He’s an unusual prospect out of Naples, Florida, though he spent the last two years in Dubuque playing for the Fighting Saints. In 2016-17, Solow had 18 goals and 51 assists for 69 points in 56 games. In the playoffs, he performed just as well with 5 points in 8 games.

The Huskies as a team are also atop the leaderboard with a 7-goals per game average. Of course, they’ll play teams that are a lot better than Sacred Heart and that number will drop, but they still may have college hockey’s highest-flying offense. I expect them to be in the top-5 in scoring when all is said and done this season.

Dylan Sikura usually gets all of the Northeastern Huskies attention, but for one weekend at least the spotlight belonged to Zach Solow. Sikura though will make his impact and could end up a Hobey Baker finalist in my opinion. If Sikura and Solow both find a way to score, the Huskies will be in a great position both for the Hockey East tournament and NCAA tournament. This team could be in the running for a conference or national title in 2018.
