The New England Patriots shocked the NFL world by trading backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, but the news didn’t surprise Tom Brady.

Well, the New England Patriots have their quarterback of the future and his name is Tom Brady.

Following the trade that sent backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a 2018 second round pick, the Patriots are left with no backup quarterback and also no immediate successor for the 40-year-old quarterback.

At first glance, the trade means the team believes Brady has a few more years left in him.  It also ensures the 5-time Super Bowl champion will finish his career in a Pat Patriot helmet.

In his weekly interview with Westwood One’s Jim Gray, Tom Brady reacted to the trade as cool as he leads a late fourth quarter comeback:  without panic and with confidence.

"“Well, I don’t know what that means,” Brady said regarding the team’s commitment to him, via NFL.com.  “This is a week-to-week league.  Things change so quick from week to week, year to year.  Everyone is concerned, in my mind, this is all about this season and us trying to win…I’m focused on this season and I’m sure everyone else in the organization is focused.”More from Chowder and Champions3 Midseason Chaim Bloom Decisions That Have Killed the 2023 Red Sox10 Patriots Who Will Be Cut by Tuesday’s Roster DeadlineMLB Screws Red Sox Fans With Broadcast for Mookie Betts Return3 Most Underpaid Celtics Heading Into the 2023 SeasonRed Sox Continue Rollercoaster Season With Massive Win"

While the rumors have shifted to who will backup Brady and what Bill Belichick will do with that second-round pick, the veteran quarterback believes things will work themselves out.

As far as Jimmy Garoppolo goes, Brady had nothing but praise for his former quarterback.

"“Jimmy was a great teammate and a great friend and he always will be,” Brady said in the interview.  “I want nothing but the very best for him.  He’s earned the trust of his teammates and the respect of his teammates and that’s all you can ask for as a player.”"

Let the Brian Hoyer rumors begin

Immediately after the trade, the 49ers released 32-year-old quarterback Brian Hoyer.

This set up immediate rumors of him returning to the Patriots as Brady’s backup quarterback.  It is definitely something that makes sense for the remainder of this season.

Not only does Hoyer have experience in the league, he is familiar with the Patriots system and it wouldn’t take him much time to catch on.  With no quarterback on the practice squad, this scenario would make the most sense for Josh McDaniels and the offense for right now.
