Kevin Youkilis

Kevin Youkilis was a fan favorite, and one hell of a player for the Boston Red Sox. Now, the team will honor the Greek God of Walks.

"“Wow, I’m extremely honored, extremely humbled and feeling a little bit shocked,” said Youkilis. “I think just to be in the select company of some of the legends that I got a chance to talk to when I was coming up through the Minor Leagues and the Major Leagues and being around them and seeing the history of their playing careers probably means the most to me. I still can’t believe it.”"

Youk spent 9 seasons with the Red Sox, with 494 walks. He also had 133 home runs and 564 RBI as he helped Boston win the World Series in both 2004 and 2007. Youkilis was a 3-time major league All-Star and won a Gold Glove in 2007.

Kevin Youkilis came up as a third baseman, but when the Sox acquired Mike Lowell before the 2006 season, he made the swap to first base. In 2007 when Boston won the World Series, Youk did not commit a single error at first base all season long in 135 games there. That postseason, he hit .500 in the ALCS against the Cleveland Indians. He was 14 of 28 with 3 home runs, a triple, a double, and 7 RBI. He also drew 5 walks for a .576 on base percentage.

Youk was a model of consistency, and there was no one else that Red Sox fans would have rather had on their team. “Yooooooouuuuuuuuk” could be heard loud and proud each and every time he stepped up to the plate.
