5 under the radar Boston Red Sox free agent options
RP Jared Hughes
Jared Hughes was non-tendered by the Milwaukee Brewers this offseason. 2017 was his only season with them, and he put up solid numbers overall. In 59.2 innings pitched he had a 3.02 ERA with 48 strikeouts. The lefty spent the first six years of his major league career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, but he was released late last March after a rough Spring Training. With the Bucs, Hughes had an ERA of 2.82 over 309.1 innings pitched. He’ll be just 32 in 2018, so Hughes surely still has a lot to offer a major league bullpen.
"According to MLB Trade Rumors, Hughes is “a groundball specialist who has generated excellent results despite a dearth of strikeouts, Hughes isn’t all that dissimilar to more hyped free agent Brandon Kintzler.”"
The Red Sox would likely be able to count on Hughes for 60 innings and a sub 3.75 ERA in 2018, and that could go a long way towards helping the club win a World Series title.
