Targeting Malcolm Brogdon should be the number one priority for the Boston Celtics in free agency.

Fourth-year guard Malcolm Brogdon is set to become a restricted free agent July 1 and it’s beginning to look like the Milwaukee Bucks are going to be unable to retain him, which makes him a possibility for the Boston Celtics.

With Khris Middleton, Brooks Lopez and Nikola Mirotic set to hit free agency coupled with Eric Bledsoe‘s four-year $70 million extension, Brogdon’s days in a Bucks jersey are just about over.

If you’re the Celtics, Brogdon should be at the top of your list for guards to target via free agency.

Why?

Because Brogdon is a perfect fit in the Celtics scheme. Not to mention he won’t cost the team every penny they have in cap space as a Kemba Walker would. Signing Brogdon over Walker at point guard would give the team the flexibility to add more pieces in free agency.

After reports that Al Horford is leaving, finding a new big man is top of mind for the Celtics once free commences. If they spend all their available cap space maxing Walker, then that would leave them with a lot fewer options to address the vacancy at the 5.

Brogdon will realistically cost the team about $60-65 million over 4 years. Reasonable price for a guy who averaged 15.6 ppg 4.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists this past season.

The reason he would fit well with the Celtics?

He isn’t a ball dominant guard like Kyrie Irving. AKA: he will not take isolation possessions away from guys like Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.

Brogdon was part of the 50/40/90 club this past season which goes to show you how efficient he can be on the offensive end. His 42.6 percent from deep last year was good for tenth best in the league.

Based on Boston’s last two postseason performances, it’s evident they lack consistent outside shooters. Enter Malcolm Brogdon.

While Brogdon is an efficient player on the offensive end, he is better known for his ability as a perimeter defender. He ranked tenth in the league for defensive win shares which should come as no surprise since defense has been an instrumental part of his game since his days at the University of Virginia.

If you remember back to the Bucks series it was George Hill and Khris Middleton doing a lot of the damage against the Boston Celtics. Adding a guy like Brogdon can stop that from happening.

Brad Stevens values guys that can play defense and guys that can shoot. Well, Brogdon can do both and he’s not going to cost you max money.

This move makes too much sense if you ask me.
