The New England Patriots made another low-risk, high-reward move with the signing of veteran wide receiver Cameron Meredith.

When it comes to taking a low-risk, high-reward chance on a player with past success, the New England Patriots have become a team with open arms.

Add former Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints wide receiver Cameron Meredith to that narrative.

As reported Friday, the team announced the signing of Meredith and then immediately placed him on the PUP list with no plans to rush him into action.

This could be one of those sneaky under-the-radar signings by the New England Patriots that add to Bill Belichick’s legacy of reviving the careers of players, even if it is just a brief stint with the team.

At 6-foot-3, 207 pounds, the 26-year-old Meredith is another big receiver added to a mix of receivers with Julian Edelman and first-round pick N’Keal Harry as the only guarantees.  Coming off an injury-plagued season with the New Orleans Saints, the former undrafted free agent out of Illinois State had his best season in the NFL in 2016.  In that season with the Chicago Bears, he caught 66 passes for 888 yards and four touchdowns.

While things were trending up for Meredith, he then missed the until 2017 season due an injury suffered that preseason.  In all, the newest Patriots wide receiver only played six games the last couple of seasons.  If he can get back to health, which the team apparently feels he will, then the rewards could be high for the Patriots even if he produces half of what he did in 2016.

But, then again, he could take the same path recent wide receivers like Jordan Matthews and Corey Coleman took.  He could just be a body who never sees regular-season action.

With Demaryius Thomas also on pup, it appears the New England Patriots are stacking up their wide receiver options with players who could potentially catch on.  Meredith may or may not pan out, but at this point in training camp, his signing seems more like a security blanket in case players like Dontrelle Inman, Maurice Harris, Phillip Dorsett and Braxton Berrios don’t take advantage of the opportunity they are given.

In all, it will be interesting to see if and when the signing of Cameron Meredith will pay off for a team searching for playmakers.
