Joe Thuney to the Detroit Lions

Speaking of Tua Tagovailoa, here’s a trade scenario by the Boston Globe’s Ben Volin that could bring the Alabama product to the New England Patriots.

"“Scenario: Patriots offer Joe Thuney and picks 23 and 87 for the No. 3 pick and the rights to Tua,” Volin teased via Twitter.  “Could the Lions bite?”"

If Bill Belichick pulled off that trade it would be compared to Kevin McHale helping out old friend Danny Ainge in the Kevin Garnett deal back in 2007.

The question shouldn’t be could the Lions bite, it is more would former Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia put his life on the line in Detroit by making such a deal.

Besides the optics of it and considering the Lions have been linked to Tua, the deal kind of makes sense depending on the direction Detroit is going in.

If they are sticking with Matthew Stafford, providing a stable offensive line in front of him is a goal and they would still have a first-round pick later in the draft if either Alabama quarterback in Jalen Hurts or another quarterback prospect intrigues them.

As far as what the New England Patriots would do with the No. 3 pick overall.

Tua Tagovailoa would certainly be interesting.  Bill Belichick does love him and would have first-hand insight on him through good friend Nick Saban, but would the team take a chance with his health history?

Historically, health concerns don’t typically influence Belichick’s decision if he feels the player can help his team.

Although this is a Joe Thuney trade scenario that probably has no chance of happening, just think of what the Patriots can do with a No. 3 pick and just the hint of them selecting Tua Tagovailoa.

Just think about a scenario in which the Miami Dolphins would give up No. 5 and their two first round picks to move up to No. 3?  Two former Bill Belichick coaches helping him out.  That could bring on another scandal and NFL rule changes in the future.

Just kidding there…sort of.
