New England Patriots: 5 great moves during the 2020 offseason
1. Not trading Julian Edelman.
But the best Patriots move this offseason was actually a non-move. It was keeping one of their all-time best players at any position. Their current best offensive player. A true team leader. And an inspiration to young and older players, as well. It’s Julian Edelman.
Edelman is one of my all-time favorite Patriots. Why wouldn’t he be? A seventh-round draft pick. A former quarterback from Kent State. A no-name player who though hard work, determination, and just sheer grit worked himself into an NFL star punt returner and wide receiver.
I’ve written before that I feel not only that Edleman is a lock New England Patriots’ Hall of Famer, but that he should be an NFL Hall of Famer, as well. he’s that good. He’s that valuable to his team.
I am sure that Patriots South in Tampa Bay would have gladly accepted Edelman into the fold. They now have the greatest quarterback and tight end in Patriots and NFL history, why not pilfer one of New England’s and the NFL’s all-time best wide receivers while you’re at it?
I’m really glad they didn’t. It’s fitting that Edleman retires as a Patriot when he decides to hang up his cleats. A full, total, amazing career in New England. On and for one team.
I personally feel all the greats should do that if they can as Julian hopefully wants to do. I think it’s a mistake if they don’t. So the Patriots best move was a non-move.
Those are my thought on the five best moves by Patriots in the offseason. There were others, of course, as well as lots of bad moves.
So as the NFL hopefully gets back into action very soon, we can all wish that good health greets them and everyone else. And, of course, we hope that all the offseason moves by the Patriots were great. We’ll soon begin to find out.
