Boston Red Sox admits Torii Hunter was right, commits to change
By Sam Minton
The Boston Red Sox came out with a statement and they admitted that they had a problem with racist behavior. This is the first step.
Hearing what Torii Hunter went through at Fenway Park made you disappointed to be a Boston Red Sox fan. It’s hard to imagine someone would do that at Fenway, but it did.
If you for some reason don’t believe Hunter, the Red Sox confirmed that it happened. They also confirmed that more racist incidents took place as well.
Hunter isn’t the only player to mention that they were called racial epithets. Boston fans will always remember Adam Jones talking about his experience in Boston.
For years we heard that the crowd in Boston has gone over the line and people chose to not believe it or say that it doesn’t represent the fanbase. Now there is no way of denying it.
The statement that the Red Sox made is really powerful. They owned up to the problem and said that they need to better.
Everyone should read the statement below. The Red Sox deserve some credit for admitting that they need to improve.
One of the things that stood out is that employees who work for the Red Sox are getting abused. That is appalling. These people work for the team and are apart of the Boston family. How could you treat them so poorly?
Boston mentions that people who use racial slurs suffer consequences but if it is not banning them for life you aren’t doing enough. I understand that it might be hard to try and implement this, but it needs to be done. If you are using this type of hate speech you don’t deserve to be able to watch your team live in person.
The Boston Red Sox seemed committed to making a change and that’s a good thing. This statement is a great first step.
But Boston needs to do more. I would be lying if I said I had all the answers, but by taking action and getting involved in the community the Red Sox can show that these words aren’t empty. It seems that the Red Sox are actually committed to making a change.
