Third, what would New England Patriots have to gain by trading Thuney.

I’ve talked about what the New England Patriots would lose by trading  Joe Thuney now. So, what’s in it for them if they do make the move? Well, there are a couple of items.

The Patriots are now in salary cap jail. They don’t really have any cap space. This essentially precludes their acquiring other good players prior to the season (I’ve speculated on what they need to add).

Trading Joe Thuney and his more than $14M cap hit would make that situation go away. Period. It would give them the flexibility to sign the offensive players they need to bolster a weak offense at the skill positions. Maybe a wide receiver?

So that’s a positive that would eventuate. In addition, the Patriots would get something in return. It could be draft picks or players who could help provide the offense with a lift. Whatever.

Another item on the plus side. But that presumes that they would add those players for 2020? No guarantee of that.
